How Far We’ve Fallen

rwrA number of people have flagged with a bit of surprise a 1983 decision where the Reagan Justice Department successfully prosecuted a Texas sherriff for waterboarding.  As terrible of a president as Reagan was, however, I’m not in the least surpised that his DOJ did the right thing when this sherriff committed torture.  Indeed, until about six years ago, no one, Democrat or Republican, thought it was acceptable to torture.  Dick Cheney would make Ronald Reagan blush.

The conservative descent into madness between the Reagan and Bush eras probably also explains why Reagan-era officials are at war with Bush-era conservatives over Dawn Johnsen.
